The Tie that Binds

the last few months spent doing just what had to be done
coaching, working, feeding, playing, cleaning, snuggling
dusk reveals the day on our face, too tired for words
gently our hands meet with a firm squeeze, we just know
sleep passes swiftly to dawn to repeat the day before
like a gift, time finally slows just long enough for a date or two
at first there is so much to say, much has been the same for both
though never a chance to share, tears begin, first me, then him
we remember her, we are changed, {together} we are changed
thankfully not opposite paths, but the same on a new road
our new normal, that which changes how we do, see and be forever
we realize all this {the grief} could have preyed on us, taken us
instead we are bound together ever tightly by a third strand
and we just know
"Though one may be overpowered, two can defend themselves.
A cord of three strands is not quickly broken."~Ecclesiastes 4:12
